Stephen and Zachary are tired of watching 22 minutes worth of anime every week. They need something new. They need something exciting! How about 60 minutes worth of anime?
That’s right – Sad Senpai and the Gaijin Kid take on a movie this week with Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach. The film, which originally hit Japanese theaters in 1986, holds the distinction of being the very first film adaptation of a video game. It also never left Japanese shores. You may wonder why that’s the case. As Stephen finds out over the course of the film, there’s a very good reason for that.
Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach was never released on anything but rental VHS. As you can imagine, it’s incredibly difficult to find. You can grab a download of the film alongside the three OVAs here. We only watched the first 60 minutes – which contains the film – because Stephen couldn’t take anymore.
If you enjoyed hearing Zachary and Stephen talk about anime for 22 minutes, you also might like hearing them talk with two other excellent dudes about video games for an hour each week over at Disembodied Voices.
