This Isn’t Anime! This Is Yoshihiko!

4f9443ddb0024be7edc27b4dca4dbcfcStephen and Zachary are tired of watching anime. It’s all the same, ya know? It’s not like there’s a wide variety of animation for all tastes. That’s why the two have turned to the far more diverse world of live action television.

In a very special episode of Sad Senpai and the Gaijin Kid, Stephen and Zachary watch the first episode of The Hero Yoshihiko and the Demon King’s Castle. It’s a satirical take on all the Japanese RPG tropes we all grew up with. Considering that Stephen hates JRPGs, he gets a big kick out of it.

Worry not, however, as we’ll back next week with animated tomfoolery and bewilderment. You wouldn’t expect anything less, right?

Yoshihiko is not available for purchase in the United States. As it stands, it’s unlicensed and can be obtained here.

Stephen Has Found His Absolute Destiny

If the title wasn’t enough to tip you off, Stephen and Zachary checked out the first episode of Revolutionary Girl Utena this week. It’s widely considered one of the best anime of all time, but Stephen won’t stop comparing it to Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

In other news, Stephen forgot his own rating system so we have no idea if he liked Utena or not.

Revolutionary Girl Utena is licensed by Nozomi Entertainment and is available for purchase at RightStuf. You can also watch it on Hulu, but only the dub is available. I would not recommend it.

When Did This Become A Video Game Podcast?

Fun Fact: Stephen likes Sonic… a lot. Zach kind of likes Sonic. They both don’t particularly like Sonic X. Why are they watching episode 2 of the oft reviled Japanese anime adaptation of the blue blur? Well, because Zach thinks it’s funny when Sonic says shit.

Beyond that, Stephen and Zachary have an in depth discussion on the merits of Sonic, Tails and everything in between as they weave in an out of the episode. That means not a lot of anime talk, but Stephen would rather talk about Sonic games anyway.

The Japanese broadcast will never be made available in America. You can grab it here.

Let’s Go To The Movies!

Stephen and Zachary are tired of watching 22 minutes worth of anime every week. They need something new. They need something exciting! How about 60 minutes worth of anime?

That’s right – Sad Senpai and the Gaijin Kid take on a movie this week with Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach. The film, which originally hit Japanese theaters in 1986, holds the distinction of being the very first film adaptation of a video game. It also never left Japanese shores. You may wonder why that’s the case. As Stephen finds out over the course of the film, there’s a very good reason for that.

Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach was never released on anything but rental VHS. As you can imagine, it’s incredibly difficult to find. You can grab a download of the film alongside the three OVAs here. We only watched the first 60 minutes – which contains the film – because Stephen couldn’t take anymore.
